Breadcrumb Category Link Correction

I have created a category menu item so that modules can be assigned to the relevant detail pages.  When linking to the category page from menus, the modules and  page appear as expected.

The relevant category link inside the breadcrumb on the detail pages links back to a page  that I would have expected to be the category page that I created and published.  However this breadcrumb links to what I would best describe as an orphan.  

Is there something I'm missing in the configuration to correct this?  I've flushed the cache, republished the correct category page | checked/unchecked override CMS breadcrumb.. no luck.  Is there something I'm missing to correct this issue?  Is there something I can do other than setting up redirects for all the breadcrumb category links?
