Radius search not working

I have an advanced search module for users to do a post code search and I wanted to be able to add a radius to their search so I cut and pasted the radius search code from the GeoMaps manual. Does that code need to be modified in order to work?

 

I notice that on the demo site you can put in the post code 10036 and it finds not only the two results for that post code but also anything around it.

 

I have a group of listings with post codes between 2600-2608 but a search only returns results for listings with the exact post code (2602 returns the one result) even if I choose a 20mile radius. How do I get it to show the listings with 2600 and 2608 as well for example?

 

any advice would be much appreciated.
