Turn off Activty Streaming, keep follow listings and use search alert

How do I turn off site activity streaming? My site does not require those features, however, it does require the ability for users to follow listings and use search alert features. If there is no method to turn off those features, is there an ability (code change, overrides, etc.) to hide parts of the mentioned features from the users?
