Migration from local storage to Amazon S3

Up until now we had all pictures, videos, etc. in our local storage. From now on we would like to start using the storage on Amazon S3. If we configure it then are we obliged to copy all the previous data in the Amazon S3 buckets?

Local/Pictures -> AmazonS3/Pictures

Or is it possible to keep also the "old" content in local storage?
