Commercial extensions to do this for VirtueMart exist, so it seems like it should be doable (my wife owns one - CSV Improved, I think). For the sake others who might want to use this, it should probably let you pick your "key field" to use for updating. I'd be surprised if there weren't interest from others in the ability to mass-update existing records. The ability to export back out - Joomla content + custom fields - would also be nice.
