Tiny, little question: Custom shadows and hover images for map icons?

I notice that the standard google markers (for example, the red bubble) has a custom shadow associated with it, also, when you hover over the icon, it changes to yellow. Is it possible in the future to also have those two additional images to associate with our custom markers or does the google API not allow that?
