Autopopulate publishing fields based on custom fields?

Is it possible to auto populate the standard fields based on custom fields?

For example with an event listing, can the publishing date be automatically set to 1 day after an event date set in a custom field?

Or have the expiration date defaulted to 30 days after the creation date?

I can think of ways to do this manually through moderation or as a cron job. However, before exploring either option, I wanted to check here first.
