IP location detection, use that for default search?

Since the detection of the location from the IP address is autopopulating the map, is there any way to use that same info and present the initial list data of listings in the users area sorted by distance from the IP?

 

Also, it would be nice to be able to pick up a cookie from somewhere of the user's address and always present them with listings in their area.

 

Or would that be too much server load?
