Detecting Title, Author, Intro Text

Hi everyone!

 

I was wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction.  I want to implement a function similar to how facebook handles url when they're typed in the status box.  Seems as if it automatically goes to that site and detects the title of the article, www.domain.com, and intro text/picture.

 

Is there a way I can have that function too for when people post a new listing to my site? 

for example, i already have custom fields made for title, author, publication.  I'd like those fields(as well as the introtext/picture) to automatically be filled out if the customfield 'link' has an address entered.

 

 

Think it's possible for a regular person to do? or am i looking at having to get a developer?

 

If hiring a developer is the only way to go,  what's the correct/best way to request this job so there is no misunderstanding for nonsofluent english speakers??
