Schema.org - Article - publisher and datePublished required

I'm sorry to have to reach out for help on this but I have tried everything that has been written in the forum as well as reading through the documentation and I cannot get this to work.  The schema type is set to Article and I have added a "publisher2" field.  I have tried just adding: <span itemprop="publisher">{FIELDTEXT}</span> to the output format field - and of course added a publisher name to the new field in the article listing - but I then get this error: The attribute publisher.itemtype has an invalid value. -- probably because the @type is now THING which is wrong.  So I tried creating a "banner" field and using the following:

<span itemprop="publisher" itemscope itemtype="http://schema.org/Article">
       <meta itemprop="publisher" content="{jr_publisher2}" />
</span

Note:  I have also used "http://schema.org/Person" and http://schema.org/Organization

None of them work.  I know it it is something simple I'm doing wrong.  I'm glad to give you admin rights to my development site if that will help get in the right direction (I have a separate error with the dataPublished but it I can get some help on one hopefully I can solve the other one.
