Narrow Your Results Page

Over the weekend we had to buy a new stove and I came across this page from sears

The functionality I liked was the "Narrow your results" feature. Look at the navigation system on the left side of the page.

The page starts out with 695 results.

Click on one of the fields and you can filter the results by that field.

Example. Click on the brand and then you get a flyout menu that shows you all of the brands and how many of each brand.

When you click on the brand some sort of filter is applied (look at the new url)

When the page reloads all of the other categories are now updated with the new number of items in that category.

If you want to remove the filter you can go back to the field ans select show all from this category.

I know that the advanced search module can do a lot. I worked with it back in the summer but I need to look at it again to see the capabilities.

I know that this is probably a tall order but If you could get that type of functionality worked out you would have a very useful site.

What would be involved to create this type of functionality?
