    Reducing YouTube embedding size

    Thanks Alejandro!

    Reducing YouTube embedding size

I've found the following method which reduces the JS load (almost 1.1mb) needed by the media player when a YouTube video is embedded on a listing page: https://www.labnol.org/internet/light-youtube-embeds/27941/ This method replaces the player with a thumbnail and only loads the player when the thumbnail is clicked. This will be hugely beneficial to load times in my opinion. Could anyone walk me through how to install this? I've attempted to do this but I cannot find mention of the player in any .thtml files. Alejandro, any plans to implement this in future versions?

Ways to encourage reviews - let's discuss!

Alejandro, I think you're on the money here. Social media is a HUGE part of marketing and promotion these days. One of my other now-established websites has a social presence on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and Tumblr. Hundreds of followers on each platform. The hits from YouTube alone brings in a big chunk of revenue and that is without factoring in Google. Speaking of Google, it's worth focusing on around 5-6 keywords and really building around them. Aim for a top 5 place within Google search results. If you don't get top 5, chances are you will flounder and simply lose heart. I'm starting to read a lot of SEO strategy books on Kindle. SEO is constantly changing and being self-employed with an online business, I know why big corporations have entire offices dedicated to this kind of thing. It's a huge task. SEO is about bringing people to your website. The hardest part is keeping them engaged and protecting your bounce rate on Google. This is one of many algorithms they use to determine ranking factor and link juice. My Jreviews site is slowly chugging along although I wish I could give it more attention.
  4. Hello Alejandro and fellow JReviewers! I hope this in the correct area. I think we all agree that Alejandro is a genius and I've said as much in a review on the JED. He's given us the tools to create our own directory sites and for that I will be extremely grateful. However, I'd imagine many JReviewers over the past decade or so have had an idea about how their own sites should look and operate. I don't have the facts but I'm guessing here that many JReviews sites do not make it into the production stage and, the few that actually do, will not last the distance. This is certainly an issue I've discovered over the years. I've had at least 2 variations of my current site. Initially, it was created under JReviews about 8-9 years ago. This didn't last long as I struggled to promote and encourage interaction from users. The second attempt was using a mixture of plugins on the Wordpress framework which, again, didn't last too long. I fell out of love with the design and ended up burning myself out with too many listings and directories. The idea for this thread is to encourage debate between fellow administrators about how they garnered user interaction. I think it will be beneficial for this JReviews family to share tips and advice on how to grow their directories. A tip I'll share is on my listing detail page I've included the following module just above the review form: We want your opinion on {listingtitle}! Why not write a review below and tell us what you think... I'm hoping this will encourage more interaction. Another tip I will share is that people generally need prompting to carry out an action. Have you ever watched a popular YouTube video and wondered how the channel managed to hit millions of subscribers? Sure, content is extremely important. Notice that most of the videos will prompt people to click a "Subscribe" button. Most videos will end with an audible prompt asking people to "subscribe for more content", too. This is a very effective marketing technique.

    Progress field

Similar to the Community Builder Progress Field: https://www.joomlapolis.com/addons/cb-progress-field As websites that implement Jreviews tend to rely on users submitting listings, I'd like to suggest a listing progress field similar to those you may find on message boards. This will indicate that a listing is not 100% complete and still has missing field values and media items. I believe a visual aid such as this would encourage owners to complete their listings. I can see this being very useful for Jreviews sites with many listings and lots of field groups. The settings for the plugin would allow admin to select whether to view the progress field on the frontend or solely in a module / menu item displayable solely to the owner.

    Integration with AltaUserPoints

Yes Alejandro, works perfectly from my initial testing. Good job. See for yourself: https://footballrated.com/wingers/686-mohamed-salah The activity stream from Alta is on the left sidebar. Activity menu item working well. Plugin for CB working well, too. All working.

    Integration with AltaUserPoints

Thanks for the response Alejandro. I should have known there was an easy way of doing this after going through this component. It has everything and it does it so well. I've done everything outlined in your previous post (the code to change was actually in alphauserpoints.php to help others who may be reading) in order to set up a rule for adding a new listing. I'm trying to reward a user 55 points for doing this, however, I am running into a few problems: 1) When submitting a new listing, the javascript does not work and the form does not move onto the next stage of adding media. However, the listing is still added. So I made about 6 copies of the same listing and now cannot delete. Clicking delete on the popup window does nothing. This must be a conflict with alta points as I have installed no other component. 2) Adding a rule does not seem to be working. This could be due to the conflict above. I've included a screenshot of my settings. You should still have the login / server info I sent via a ticket if you need to check this with your own eyes.

    Integration with AltaUserPoints

Hey Alejandro and team, I notice that Jreviews features integration with AlphaUserPoints which has been taken over by another developer and changed to AltaUserPoints. More information here: https://extensions.joomla.org/extension/altauserpoints/ I'm wondering if you plan on offering integration with this plugin in the future? Regards

  13. It is a brand new install over a fresh Joomla install. I will submit a ticket with relevant info.
  14. Hello, Now I've run into another issue while attempting to add a listing type: __jreviews_criteria_ratings' doesn't exist It would not let me save a listing type so I had to navigate away using the menu. Once I clicked the jreviews component I received this issue. If you like I can send you access info so you can check the configuration of the package.
  15. Well, it looks like you did reply to my ticket but the response went to my junk folder. Sorry for the repost! The url you included worked like a charm for me! Thank you. For the record, I did try the reinstall (both clean and overwrite) before I wrote this but still had the issue. Thanks again.
